"Six months ago I came in with nothing. I had no understanding of CV or VCAs, waveforms, patch cables, gates or triggers. But now…? It’s like WOW. I now compose, orchestrate and improvise with these machines.

I thought I just didn’t have one of those brains with the innate ability to comprehend technical information. Sarah’s patience, breadth of knowledge and talent for education showed me that totally wasn’t true."

- Laura

LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED!

Hey friend, I see you, unboxing your new MAVIS (or, juuuust about to click “buy”—either way, great choice!)

You’re dying to jump into the world of modular synthesis and electronic music, and yet…

  • Every time you try to get started you feel overwhelmed (where do I begin? What if I break something? WTF is a sample and hold??) Let’s be honest… there are a million options, and it’s a LOT to figure out on your own
  • Or maybe you took the plunge and bought your first synthesizer (Hello, MAVIS!) and you’ve been obsessively watching Youtube videos, reading manuals, & taking notes…but #holymoly modular synthesis is deep.
  • You keep making the same sounds over and over again,  but you know so much more is possible
  • You're stalling on getting started, maybe even feeling like you’re not “smart” or “techie” enough for modular synthesis… (Hint: You are. Trust me.)
  • You’re deeply creative and love music but whenever you try to go from “sound I’m hearing in my head” to “sound I’m building on my synth,” something gets lost in translation

Oh yeah. I’ve been there.

Let’s get one thing straight: if learning how to make music with modular synthesizers is something you want to do, you are 100% capable.

And Moog’s semi-modular synth MAVIS is an awesome place to start.

But even with the right instrument, you still need a clear, step-by-step guide that shows you how to make the kind of music you know you’re capable of creating—so you can share your passion with the world

And Discover Modular Synthesis with Moog MAVIS is that everything-you-need-to-know guide you’ve been looking for.

So, I’m curious -

How would it feel to…

  • Kick off your synthesis journey on the right foot, getting straight to what matters most so you can start making music quickly

  • Know exactly how to create classic synth tones, bass lines, sci fi sounds, grooves, or any other sound you can imagine

  • Tap into truly unique, unconventional, and creative sound worlds that most people don’t realize are possible

  • Understand universal modular synthesis fundamentals, so that you can approach any new synth with confidence

  • Create more music that inspires you, in a way that is fun, experimental, and joyful

“I had all the pieces in front of me, but I was having trouble putting them together. I'm more confident now in my understanding of my tools and my instruments—it opened up my idea of what the instrument could be. Also, I just feel more confident in sharing my music with people…I'm excited to say yes to doing performances or working on art projects that I wouldn't have otherwise.” - REINA

CAN WE TALK ABOUT THESE MYTHS IN THE MODULAR SYNTHESIS WORLD?

MYTH #1: “In order to make electronic music, I need a huge, expensive studio with tons of gear.”

Ah yes, this sounds like a classic case of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome).

I love synths as much as the next person, BUT—what you do with your tools is way more important than the tools themselves. Even with a compact synthesizer like MAVIS, you’ll find that you’re able to make a huge variety of classic, expansive, groovy, and just plain weird sounds.

PLUS—I’ll teach you how to expand your MAVIS setup to add MIDI, effects, and extra sound capabilities using super simple, affordable (and even free!) hardware and software tools.

You’ll be amazed by how far you can go with a simple studio setup.

MYTH #2: “I don’t have a music background, so I’m way behind—catching up will take forever.”

First of all, you’re not behind. The fact that you’re taking steps toward your musical goals puts you way ahead of most people who never take action.

Second, is music theory required for making music? Absolutely not.

You don’t need to have any formal music training to learn how to make music with MAVIS. This course starts at the very beginning, helping you build a foundation in core sound design concepts and how to work with MAVIS at the same time.

MYTH #3: “Modular synthesis is so complicated. There’s no way I’m smart enough for this.”

This is simply not true!!

Look, I understand that getting started with modular synthesis can feel daunting. For years, I too held myself back thinking I wasn’t “techie” enough to work with hardware synths.

Hear me when I say this:

You are 100% capable of making music with modular synths. It's not a matter of being a “tech-wizard”, but simply of finding the right way to learn, that doesn’t assume any prior knowledge, and that walks you through everything you need to know, in the order you need to know it. (Hint: I've got something for you! Keep reading.)

MYTH #4: “You can learn modular synthesis just by watching Youtube videos and experimenting—just plug things in and see what happens!”

Welllllll… Yes, there is a ton of helpful content on Youtube (psst: I have a YT channel of my own, with a video all about MAVIS!)

Here's what I know: we all learn differently, and some folks (like myself!) need clear, step-by-step instructions in order to feel confident enough to dive into something new. For many, “just plug things in and experiment” is a recipe for analysis-paralysis & creative lock-down…but show you where to start and what to focus on first? You’re golden.

If you’re the kind of person who appreciates having a super organized curriculum with loads of examples, workbooks, and extra support, this class is for you!

"I have a much better understanding of what all the controls do, how the signal flows, and how the modules are connected—in short, how the instrument works! :)

What stands out to me is Sarah's encouragement, positivity, and enthusiasm. The approach is very personal and relatable, the material is spot on.

"I am now comfortable patching my Mavis—with intention!"

"Before joining this course, I was mostly haphazardly patching my semi-modular Moogs. I felt like I was lacking knowledge to patch with intention.

This course allowed me to get a better understanding of Mavis and its patch bay. Thanks to this course, I am now comfortable patching my Mavis—with intention. I highly recommend the course!

- Ron

"I’m a noob and now I have a MUCH better understanding of all the terms and what the knobs and patches can do.

I’m still learning and I’m taking my time to absorb it all. There’s a lot to learn!
- Claudia

"I am still in the process of going through the course, but when I look at Mavis now, I no longer see an undifferentiated array of knobs and jacks but rather orderly groupings, which makes the process of learning modular synthesis much less daunting."

- S.

Hey there! I’m

Sarah Belle Reid

…full-time performer-composer who plays modular synthesizer, trumpet, and electroacoustic instruments of my own design.

I started out as a classically trained trumpet player, on the ever-stressful orchestral audition circuit (IYKYK). I went to college and found success as a freelancer, touring and performing all over the world. But there was always something nagging at me…

Is this really the best and fullest way to express myself creatively?

While that works for many, it wasn’t the case for me. I couldn’t help but feel like I had so much more to say. I wanted to create my own music, write my own songs, and develop a unique musical voice for myself.

So I did something that terrified me. Years into my career as a musician, I embarked on an entirely new direction and started learning modular synthesis and electronic music production.

It might sound simple enough, but here’s the truth: I really struggled at first. For years I felt overwhelmed by all the technology and too intimidated to ask for help.

Through trial and error, I eventually learned how to compose, perform, and improvise with synthesizers on a very deep level. I now make a living playing these instruments on film scores, records, and live on tour with musicians of all genres.

And I’ve helped 1000+ students go from feeling just as overwhelmed and intimidated as I once felt to gaining mastery in synthesis, and reaching new levels of creative expression and control.

Whether it’s your passion-hobby, or the next chapter in your musical career, everything you need to make music with MAVIS is inside of Discover Modular Synthesis: Moog MAVIS.
